My website doesn't show up on Google!
Is your website not showing up on Google? Find out how indexing works and which factors influence your presence in search results.
My website doesn't appear on Google: why?
It's a common question: "Why doesn't my website appear on Google if it's already online and visible on the internet?". In theory, the site was built correctly, yet it remains absent from search results. To fix the situation, it's important to understand how search engines work and what factors influence indexing and ranking.
How search engines work
The internet contains billions of websites, all competing for top positions on Google. Google, like other search engines, works as a giant index: the first results typically show the most relevant content for each search, alongside paid results (ads).
For your site to appear, it needs to be properly indexed and SEO-optimised. Without these two conditions, your website won't show up on Google even if it's accessible online.
Check the robots.txt file
One of the most common issues lies in the robots.txt file. In many cases, a website doesn't appear on Google because this file is blocking crawlers from indexing its pages.
Check whether the file contains the line Disallow: /. If it does, remove the "/" to allow all pages on the site to be indexed.
Create and submit the sitemap.xml
To speed up the process, create and submit your sitemap.xml file to Google. This is done through Google's site management platform (formerly Google Webmaster Tools). The sitemap.xml can include your website's internal links as well as image information.
If you need guidance, check out our guide on creating a sitemap.xml file. Once submitted, you'll need to wait a while before results start to appear. You can check which pages are already indexed by using the site:yourdomain.com operator on Google.
Content quality makes all the difference
Organic results depend on several factors: titles, descriptions, keywords, meta descriptions and, above all, the quality of the content. Filling pages with meaningless text won't work; content needs to be useful, relevant and SEO-optimised.
